Behind the Map: A Step-by-Step Guide to the Dataset

The Mapping the Arts and Humanities team has launched a new blog series, Behind the Map, to help users navigate the MAHP dataset. Over the next few weeks, the team will share practical guidance on completing your entry, understanding data fields, and exploring the dataset using digital humanities methods.
When the Mapping the Arts and Humanities resource was first developed, it began with a simple goal: to build a comprehensive, openly accessible database of research infrastructures across the Arts and Humanities. Since its launch in 2023, the resource has continued to grow with the help of the community. Each contribution has played an important role in keeping MAHP accurate, up to date, and reflective of the people and organisation it represents.
But our work doesn’t end there.
Some of the most common questions we receive are: What’s the best way to fill out the form? What does each field mean? What can I actually do with the data?
That’s why we’ve launched this new blog series as a practical guide to help you navigate the dataset and strengthen your entry to increase its visibility.
Each week, we’ll also walk you through what each field is for, why it matters, and how different parts of the dataset connect to support analysis. More importantly, we’ll introduce tools so you have everything you need to explore the data yourself: from audio-visual materials to Python-based methods.
For example, we’ll look at how to trace research trends over time, identify gaps and areas of growth, and examine collaborations across sectors like universities, IROs, learned societies, and commercial partners.
Keep an eye out for upcoming posts and sign up to the newsletter for updates. If there’s a particular tutorial you’d like us to cover, don’t hesitate to get in touch at [email protected].
